A hands-on family experience in growing, harvesting & fermenting

Spend the morning with us on the homestead learning how food moves from seed to harvest to preservation.

Together, families will explore practical small-space and vertical gardening, harvest fresh cucumbers, make fermented pickles, taste a variety of homemade ferments, and plant a fall crop to continue growing at home.

Your family will leave with two reusable fermentation setups, the pickles you make together, everything you need to make fermented pico at home, and a fall growing project to continue in your own space.

Friday, August 21 • 8:30–11:00am
Northwest Monument, Colorado
$135 per family
Space is intentionally limited to 10 families.

This is not a drop-off class. Parents, children, and grandparents are invited to participate together.

One registration is for your whole family—parents, children, and grandparents are welcome to participate together.

From Seed to Jar

What happens when we stop thinking of gardening and food preservation as separate skills—and instead experience the whole process together?

From Seed to Jar is an immersive A Homemade Heritage Family Workshop designed to help families learn, work, make, experiment, and try new things side by side.

We’ll begin in the garden, exploring practical ways to grow more food in the space you have. You’ll see how our family grows tomatoes, cucumbers, pole beans, winter squash, and other crops vertically, and we’ll talk about ideas that can work whether you have acreage, a suburban backyard, or a patio.

Then we’ll move from growing to harvesting as families pick cucumbers straight from the garden and use them to make a jar of naturally fermented pickles together.

Along the way, we’ll learn the basics of vegetable fermentation, taste several of our family’s favorite ferments—including sauerkraut, spicy sauerkraut, fermented pickles, and fermented pico—and talk about how to recognize what’s normal as food ferments.

Families will also plant a fall crop to take home and continue growing, and we’ll talk about what can still be planted in our area as summer begins turning toward fall.

Keep Going at Home

We don’t want the experience to end when you leave our homestead.

Every family will head home with another complete fermentation setup and the fresh ingredients needed to make fermented pico together in your own kitchen.

The goal isn’t “homework.” It’s to help your family discover that you really can take what you learned here and do it again in your own space.

A Note About Seasonal Produce
Because this workshop is rooted in growing and working with fresh, seasonal food, the exact produce and projects may occasionally need to change based on what’s thriving in the garden and what’s available locally. If Mother Nature has other plans, we’ll simply adjust! Any substitutions will be thoughtfully chosen to provide the same hands-on learning experience and skills your family can carry home.

More Than Learning a Skill

A Homemade Heritage Family Workshops are designed to be more than traditional classes.

Our hope is to create meaningful experiences where parents and children can learn, work, problem-solve, make something real, and discover what they’re capable of together.

We want your family to leave not only knowing how to grow or ferment something new, but inspired to carry more learning, making, growing, and working together into everyday family life.

That’s why we intentionally keep our workshops small. We want room for questions, participation, conversation, exploration, and connection—not a rushed checklist of activities.

Want More Than One Project Set?

Every family registration includes one complete set of materials for all of our hands-on projects.

If your family would like additional sets so siblings or family members can work more independently, you may add:

Additional Project Set — $40 each

Each additional set includes:

  • An additional quart fermentation setup + ingredients for fermented pickles
  • An additional pint fermentation setup + ingredients for fermented pico
  • An additional pot, soil, and seeds for the growing project

That way, each person with an additional set can make their own pickles, take home their own pico project, and plant their own fall crop.

Who Is This For?

This workshop is designed for families to participate together.

We welcome a wide range of ages, and children will naturally participate at different levels depending on their age, interest, and ability. Parents remain alongside their children throughout the experience and are responsible for determining which activities are appropriate for them.

Our workshops are genuinely hands-on and may involve garden tools, kitchen equipment, food preparation, animals, heat, or other activities with inherent risks. Families should come prepared to participate together and supervise their own children throughout the experience.
